Dear AZR community,
We are excited to share that AZR and the building in which it is housed have been acquired. Kevin and Melanie Layman took ownership on Friday, April 29, 2022. We are deeply grateful to our wonderful staff, our guests, and the entire climbing community for the incredible support you have all shown us over the last 18+ years. AZR is what it is and has been successful because of you. Twenty years ago, we wanted to start a family business but knew very little about climbing or running a retail business in general. From the beginning of our endeavor into creating AZR, you, the climbing community, showed up, supported us, taught us and grew with us. We will be forever grateful for this time. |

Handing over this amazing community that we’ve created together was not something we took lightly. You are in great hands with Kevin and Melanie and will likely not even notice any changes. AZR will continue to run as it has. Kevin and Melanie are looking forward to many successful years with you.
What started out as an interest in purchasing our building, Kevin and Melanie decided to try and make it a package deal, after visiting AZR and falling in love with climbing.
Kevin & Melanie have recently returned to their favorite state of Arizona after a five-year stint in Southern California and they are thrilled to be back. Though Kevin’s professional background has been predominantly commercial roofing for the last 25 years, he is a man of numerous passions, some of which include dabbling with classic car restorations and home remodeling / renovations.
Melanie’s professional background is multifaceted as well. She began her professional career in the culinary arts & was a chef for countless years, first in resort restaurants & then eventually, a private chef for a handful of families.
Her love of dance & fitness eventually led her to transition into the health & wellness world, causing her to hang up her chef’s coat & put her cooking career on the back burner.
Entering the fitness realm in 2007, she became a group exercise instructor, a personal trainer & in 2008, a Master Trainer for Zumba Fitness. She licensed instructors worldwide, presented at fitness conferences & conventions on an international level & played a significant role in the filming of promotional videos & continuing education videos for both instructors & the company.
The desire to continue her own education & follow the pursuit of guiding others down a path towards healthier, happier & more fulfilled living, she went back to school to study holistic nutrition, health & life coaching & has since then, combined all of her trades to offer a very “tailored” & custom service to each individual client.
Kevin & Melanie’s active lifestyle & their large attraction to challenges & trying new things brought them to AZR. Not only were they hooked after their first climbing experience, but they fell in love with the climbing community after witnessing the organic nature in which they all empower & embrace each other.
That sense of unity & type of environment is the perfect match to Kevin & Melanie’s personality & their overall way of life. They have 2 daughters: Abby, 21 (a junior at ASU) & Caley, 18 (a junior in high school).
Kevin & Melanie are very excited to now be a part of the AZR family & community & look forward to watching the evolution of this awesome place continue to unfold.
