Sport Climbing 2020 Olympic Barbie doll

- 2020 Olympic Sport Climbing Barbie doll -
I did a shout out to climbers on Facebook asking if they could find any problem or misused climbing gear that the 2020 Olympic Sport Climbing Barbie has going on.

Today is a wonderful day!!!! I am now a proud owner of a 2020 Olympics Sport Climbing Barbie doll. I’m Psyched!!! It is obvious that whoever created the illustrations that are included on this Barbie doll box, had no clue how to use climbing gear. Okay Climbers!!!! How many climbing gear things can you find that is incorrect or life threatening which is shown on this Barbie doll box. Explain your answer.

- Marty's product review follows the Facebook comments.

………………………….

Melisa - Where does one begin.
…………………………..
Tom - Keep it in the Box!
Marty - A+ condition all except for the clear plastic box has a crinkle. I will say its B+ condition overall. Thinking of finding another one so I can display it outside of the box.
…………………………..
Christa - Wait that’s not how you are supposed to climb??? No WONDER I took a grounder.
Marty - Yes …. Right!!!!
……………………………
Terri - It’s really hard to climb with a strap around your thighs and one hand pinned down.
Marty - That’s classic! I didn’t have that one on my list!
Terri - Score!!!
……………………………
Jeff - What? That’s not the correct use for a ATC? Ken said it was OK!
……………………………..
Fred - Her neck angle shows that she has taken a few whippers,,, plus a few other incidents:)
………………………………
Stephie - Well I’d say plastic quick draws would be a huge red flag.
Marty - Well it is a toy, but you still score points for that comment!
……………………………
Sean - Considering Barbie got gold, maybe we’re the ones using things incorrectly.
Marty - You saw the gold medal, but what may be strange about that medal?
…………………………….
Cliff - Are you trying to tell me I’m not supposed to tie in using an ATC and a quickdraw?
Marty - Sign the waiver first, then we’ll talk!!!!
……………………………
JJ - Why wouldn’t they consider a climber consult for the design?
Marty - This is really sad, and this Barbie doll is a tool that brings forth inspiration to a wonderful Child’s imagination. The child now believes that this example is correct for the subject of being a rock climber.
………………………………
Marty - Come on climbers. I can still name at least 8 more problem items that have not been mentioned yet.
……………………………….
Keenan - Looks good to me.
Marty - Yes this Barbie doll staring in your next movie while being rigged in this manner, will leave all viewers on the edge of their seat!!
………………………………
Curt - Well, the choking hazard is problematic..
Marty - Especially if you are the next athlete in line to climb in the Olympics! Not the time to choke!
………………………………..
Robert - Leg loops in the illustration aren’t doubled back… but the ATC in a draw… into that jingis knot!
Marty - Thank you Robert! On the Barbie the leg loops look like they may be doubled back, but on the illustration on the front of the box shows the leg loops are not doubled back at all. Yes jingis knot action going on.
………………………………….
Marty - Come on climbers! I can still see at least 6 more problem items that have not been mentioned yet.
Robert - The rope through the ATC isn’t through the carabiner, the carabiner is a quick draw that is clearly not locked… The other draw serving as a back up leg loop strap is a bit odd too… maybe if she tied the loop of rope around her neck…
Robert - She also tied in through only her waist loop, but maybe that is why she is using the second draw as a back up…
Christa - Out of everything going on here the one that bothers me the most is her harness not being doubled back. I will forever check every harness I see after working in the climbing gyms for that long.
……………………………………
Kim - Definitely getting one for my niece!
Marty - I hope you include with it a proper training session.
Kim - That, you shouldn’t use a ATC, a quick draw, and some gum to climb? I bet McGyver could make it work!
……………………………………..
Terri - The open carabiners?
Marty - Very good Terri, which I will expand a little more on it in my follow up review later on tonight.
………………………………………
Chuck - The harness in the illustration has the leg loops connected directly to the waist and are elastic with no belay loop among other problematic items.
Marty - Very nice Chuck. But looking at all of the evidence shown, the illustration on the back of the box does show a belay loop. However you still score points on the harness subject.
Chuck - They’re using a couple different harnesses designs. The belay device is being used in a unique way to say the least. LOL All this being said, it appears she won the gold medal. It’s hard to beat that.
………………………………………
Alex - On the picture of her with the close-up, can’t figure out why the quick draw would be going from her waist belt down to her leg loop. Never seen that before. But then again, the whole design of the harness and it’s loops is incorrect, but oh well, it’s Barbie. On the other picture, the rope looks like it is going through some kind of ATC then some kind of quick draw, with the loop on the other end attached to her harness belt, buckle. Don’t get me started on the ATC. Ditch those extra items, the rope should be directly attached to her harness.
Marty - Robert beat you to the “waist to leg quickdraw.” Yes I noticed that square buckle. I do have in the museum a homemade harness that a person made out of a vehicle seat belt. Yes just click the square buckles together, and climb away. No back up or nothing. So buckle drawn incorrectly, but still fits the code somewhat as “that’s the place for the gear to attach to.”

Marty’s Review of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Sport Climbing Barbie Doll, made by Mattel.

Marty - August 2024 - My first reaction to this Barbie is that it is totally awesome! Wow the subject of climbing in the Olympics for the first time, the chosen colors, and the way it is packaged makes it a very attractive item to have. Maybe all who participated in this Facebook post had this same first reactive feeling to it? I could be wrong! But what I do know is that everybody when they first looked at the illustration on the front of the box, everybody said “What the heck is going on with that?”

In the Olympics Barbie is a Lead Climber. Barbie in the illustration shows her as a Top Rope climber (Marty Points).

No matter what, a single rope is tied directly into the harness when the climber is on Lead, or on Top Rope (Alex points). (Auto belay is different). Climbing Wisdom (Cliff Points): “The more single items that are attached together in a row, the more chances of failure can happen within the system.” How many items does Barbie have hooked together in the illustration? Back to the words “Single Rope.” The illustration shows that there are two ropes that Barbie is attached to as the top rope. Nobody mentioned this (Marty’s Points).

(Robert points) He mentions the Jingis knot configuration in the front of box illus. I feel that the artist had no clue how to draw this point of safety. If two ropes are attached then the knots would have rope tails. So now I feel that the top rope attachment is only a open loop. (Marty Points).

Belay device - Nobody caught this. There is absolutely no reason for the belay device to have the red cord. On the back of the box illus it shows that the red cord is looped through the two rope holes and then tied with a simple overhand knot. A overhand knot (Marty Points)” “The lesser knot slips frequently compared to the secured knot.” For cord or rope, the safest way to attach two ends together is with a double Fishermans knot, or a figure eight knot on a follow through (tails are opposite). On the back of the box illus it clearly shows the red cord taking up the rope holes in the belay rappel device, of which now if the red cord is not removed, this device is useless because the cord is in the way of where the rope goes. (Marty Points).

Quickdraws - (Stephie Points) Plastic quickdraws/carabiners. Well it is a toy so, but you still get the points!  (Terri Points) Carabiner gates are open. What gets me about this is that the back of the box illustration shows Barbie ready to go, as she is pulling the carabiner gate even wider open than the actual toy offers. The artist could have easily drawn the carabiner safely closed as it is in reality.

Quickdraws - (Robert Points) Back of the box illustration shows a quickdraw attached to harness and left leg loop. I feel that the artist had no clue of what the quickdraws were actually for, so the artist envisioned it may be used as a extra protection device in case failure happened. (Marty Points) What you all missed is that the carabiners attached to Barbie all have the gates facing inward. My general rule is to face the carabiners outward away from the body especially if a non-locking carabiner is attached to the harness. At the harness point, the climbers stomach, skin or shirt would otherwise open the carabiner gates repetitively during climbing. And if the climber looked down at their carabiner, they could not see if the carabiner gate was open or closed. The Barbie does have a harness gear loop on the left side of the Barbie. Seen in the back of box illus.

Harness - (Robert Points) Leg loops are not doubled back. (Chuck Points) Noticing that there are a few different harnesses being shown on this Barbie Box. Leg strap attachments to the harness incorrect etc. (Alex Points) Adding even more details to the many different harness designs being shown, square buckle. (Marty Points) Chuck mentioned the belay loop, but did not mention that in the back of box illustration it shows the belay loop behind the tie in loop, not being a part of the tie in loop.

Gold Medal - (Sean Points) Barbie has the Gold medal. (Terri Points) Gold medal has a silver medal ribbon color on it (Red). I did research on this and found that in most countries, Blue is the preferred lanyard color for the first place position. However in Canada and England, Red is the lanyard color for the first place position. Furthering my research I see that this Barbie was made in Indonesia, and Indonesia says that the Blue lanyard is the first place choice. However this Artist could be living anywhere in the world, but somehow came up with the Barbie Gold ribbon lanyard being Red. Looking at the three 2020 Medals, it shows that all ribbons were made exactly same, and have a few colors on them. But what I see is that Blue is the dominating color that is seen on those ribbon lanyards. The 2020 Olympic ribbons were created and agreed upon one year before the Olympics happened. This Barbie Doll creation is Trademarked the International Olympic Committee, so I feel that the artist at any time could have reached out and asked to see the actual 2020 Olympic lanyard design, that I bet was already being shown to the public worldwide to get everybody psyched for the upcoming Olympics.

What I love best about this Barbie, is the inspirational question on the back of the box.
- Do you love climbing?
- You can be a sport climber!

Even though I am pointing out the things that this Barbie does not line up correctly with true climbing gear applications, Wow this Barbie totally Rocks!! I love it!!! I am so glad I have it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Terri Points) I believe Terri came up with the most creative answer: “It’s really hard to climb with a strap around your thighs and one hand pinned down.” In-Other-words: Hard to climb when you are zip-tied to a box!

Marty - I think that the girl on the front of the box illustration looks like Sierra Blair.
Marty - I think that the Barbie Doll face looks like Denise Richards (Girl in Starship Troopers movie).

In closure (JJ Pierce Points) Why did they not consult a climber for the design? That says it all!!!

Climbers - Double check your partners, be psyched, and have fun!!
Thanks for participating!!
:)

..................................................................................................

Marty - The problem overall begins with Mattel: Description of product: "A harness with rope, weight, and three climbing clips make Barbie doll ready to scale new heights and go for the gold. Instead of simply researching to see what a certain piece of gear is, Mattel describes the belay device as a "weight" for climbers. Also there is no rope included, except for the short cord segment. Four years later and lets see what Amazon says about the doll....... "comes with weight" ....etc. The 2020 Olympic Barbie doll retails for between $20 and $35.
.................................................
Michelle - What?!?! Mattel has created a toy that inaccurately reflects reality... nooo!!!! If accuracy was Mattel's goal Barbie would not have the equivalent of an 18 inch waist!!!

Barbie Camping Fun doll, also rock climbs.    c.2017

For the Barbie camping/climbing doll, the climber is using a rope to climb up to a pre-clipped carabiner, and the other end of the rope is not tied to anything. Carabiners instead of quickdraws. Harness leg loops are not doubled back. Possibly this design carried over into the 2020 Olympic Sport Climbing Barbie?
