Chouinard
- Ice Screws -

Chouinard Equipment
- Ventura California USA
- Chouinard tubular ice screws were produced in four sizes. 13, 17, 22, and 28 cm.
- c.1975 - 1986

- Chouinard in 1969 was selling Salewa and Charlet Moser ice screws.
- In 1972 Chouinard began making and testing ice screw prototypes to come up with Chouinard's own brand of quality ice screws. The four sizes of Chouinard Tubular ice screws became available in 1975. First shown in the 1976 Chouinard catalog. (Collectors note: Technically there were only a 1975 and 1977 Chouinard catalog made, but at some point the 1975 catalog was reprinted, adding a photo of drilled hexentrics and the Tubular ice screws (known as the 1976 catalog)).

Differences between the Chouinard 1975 and 1985 Tubular ice screws.
Even since 1975, Chouinard continued to tweek the design of the ice screws, mainly the design of the cutting teeth and the overall tip of the ice screw. I included some measurements of the ice screw threads, which may help to show the difference between the years.

Homemade ice screw ratchet
- Craftsman wrench and 7/8 socket with two channels cut out of it. What is interesting about this wrench is that the Chouinard 1975 Tubular ice screws fit in it no problem, but the 1985 and 1986 ice screws will not fit at all. All of the Chouinard ice screws will fit into the Chouinard ice screw ratchets.

Chouinard 1984 and 1985 catalog.
- I notice that the threads on the ice screws shown in the catalogs are backwards. Not sure if the original photo for the catalog got reversed and nobody caught it, or it was intentional?

It looks exactly like a 1989 Chouinard Ice screw but there is a feint diamond in a square mark, which shows this is  a 1990 Black Diamond product. The 1988 Chouinard ice screw version has "U.S.A."

Chouinard Ice Screw Ratchet
- c.1983
- The ratchet first came out in 1983, but was redesigned adding a thicker holding collar, and adding more teeth to the ratchet. The 1984 catalog lists the new ratchet being made of two colors, green and black, but I have seen a few versions all being black.  Photos showing the comparison between the 1983 and 1984 Chouinard ice screw ratchet versions.

There is no mention in the catalogs of the red/silver version of the Chouinard ratchet. So I figure it was the last ratchet that was created in late 1986, before discontinuing the ratchet beginning of 1987.
