- (Narrator)

During 1971, Bill was undecided on what to do with his life. He was thinking of going big time with his DOLT company products, or stopping the DOLT company all together and putting his attention into his work at McDonnall Douglas, also a girlfriend of his that he met while climbing at Stoney point was thinking about moving to Alaska.

The DOLT company advertisements became simple in the 1971 Summit magazines, as Bill was deciding what direction to go forward with in his life. This is a scene from Christmas Eve 1971, as Bill telephone calls his friend Don Lauria, and has a short conversation with him.

CAT - (To audience) "A phone conversation with Bill and Don Lauria"
On Christmas Eve 1971.
( Cat - is Don Lauria )

( Don is at his house on Christmas eve, and then the phone starts to ring )

(Don answers the phone)
Don - "Hello"

Bill - “Hello, Don?”, (Dolt asked in a hush tone.)

Don - “Yeah, Bill, what’s up?”

Bill - (
Dolt answered, his voice almost a whisper.)  “um….I just called to wish you a Merry Christmas”.
Picture

Don - “Merry Christmas to you too Bill”.
(Dolt doesn’t answer) (Pause)

Don - (I was searching for a subject that might break his silence)
“Bill, what’s the deal we were talking about a couple of weeks ago?”

Bill - “Oh, I’m not sure what I’m going to do”. (He replied slowly sounding depressed)
“I just called to wish you and yours a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year”.

Don - “Well, thanks, Bill. Same to you”. (I replied awkwardly)

Bill - “Thank you, Don. Goodbye”.
(Silence)

.........................................................................................................................................

(CAT, STEPH go back to computer and podium)
(Christmas props remain on)
(Bill stays on stage)

- (Narrator)

As far as I know those were the last words William Andrew Feuerer ever uttered.

(PAUSE)

One week later Ken McNutt noticed newspapers stacking up at Dolts house. Ken checked it out and found Bill hung himself from a water pipe on his back porch.  He left no note, no will ... nothing. His funeral, paid for by his veteran's insurance, was attended by fourteen people, only six of whom were from his climbing world. The priest in attendance knew only two things about Bill Feuerer…. his name, and how he died.

Don posted an advertisement in Summit magazine that read:

The “Dolt” Dead
William Dolt Feuerer, well-known manufacturer of rock climbing equipment, was found dead on January 6th. He apparently took his own life sometime around Christmas. He lived in Santa Monica, California.
Picture

A second Summit advertisement was posted by Don”

IN MEMORIAM….
William A. Feuerer
Climber, inventor, craftsman, photographer, poet,
Friend.
Doltco’s creator and sole-employee,
Just Bill Dolt, the Dolt.
Amiable, honest, eccentric, ingenious, tireless,
Lonely.
Dolt is dead, and only he knows why.

( On stage the coat rack is pulled out and placed on center stage. A noose made out of a climbing rope is placed and hangs down from it. )
( Bill is walking around the coat rack in silence contemplating and staring at the noose )

- ( Bill )

I myself don’t know why I decided to take my life.

I was a mountaineer damn it!!!!….
I was a mountaineer damn it!!!!….
I was a mountaineer damn it!!!!….
( Bill shouting and stomping his feet )

( Pause )

Picture

….but at the same time the many climbs I was on scared the crap out of me. It really was scary at times……So I got to sit back and watch my friends become more famous….. as they risked their lives.

( Pause )

I was the Master craftsman to all mountaineers!
( Bill shouted )

( Pause )
( Pause )

I created I crea .... ( Bill trying to find his words )

( Pause )

I created the best products ever! But while hanging on the noose I found that one of the reasons I did it all was to be better than my friends Tom and Yvon, and in the end I found out they were not even trying to be better than me. As I stare at all of my creations….. I don't know what they are any more, because I was only making them out of ….pride?

Life’s pressures finally overtook me. I did everything by myself for others to show others how awesome and creative I was….maybe I should have let the others more into my life. That way I could share my creations within the creation process, over just showing the final product. Everything I created was a gift for somebody else to enjoy.

( Pause )

My girlfriend Ann recently moved to Alaska. ( Bill says somewhat silently )

( Pause )

Maybe if I didn’t name myself as the Dolt, I would not have worried about being…..perfect. I hid from my silly mistakes to show others how perfect I can be…just look at my creations and you will see the perfection!!!!
And what perfection do I have now?

( Pause )

I did everything for everybody and now…..
……..……I find myself still alone.

………..Was I even loved?

( BIG PAUSE )

( Lights OFF Please )

........................................................................................................................................

( Bill removes his hat and while staring in tears at the audience, Bill drops his hat to the floor. Marty becomes Marty again and walks off stage)

Years later in 2012, a girl named Audrey surfaced, that is Bill's offspring from Ann in Alaska.
……A daughter that Bill never knew he had………….

-- Audrey writes this……….

(PAUSE)

“You woke me out of a sound sleep this morning, hours before the alarm was set to ring…you were desperately trying to tell me something … I wanted to hear you, to embrace you….to convince you you are loved, still.
Picture

And you are remembered, not just this day….but every single day.
Picture

I don’t know if you can see it or feel it, or know it… but your soul is dancing, and lives on.
Picture

Sending you all of our love, wherever you are…
Picture

You are loved, YOU ARE LOVED!, you are loved.

Signed….Audrey and the muppet.

(Marty,  Steph and Cat back up on stage )

Marty - "This is my most amazing story in climbing. Besides the Marty Karabin story of course! It shows how totally amazing life can be with the thrills and chills and adventure. But it also shows how fragile life can be as well. I will like to give Steph and Cat a very huge THANKS for having the strength in assisting me in this amazing DOLT story.

                               .............................................................................................................

After the end of the Dolt Show I included a short talk about a teaching philosophy I developed named, “99 and 1.” The danger of putting 100% on anything. I feel that Bill Feuerer had 100% going and it led him into a hole that he could not find a way out of.

Example:

Q - If I am asked if I believe in myself, I answer 99%.

A - I know that I am not perfect and I will make mistakes in life. The 1% allows me to relook at myself when things go wrong. It calms the self from holding onto a feeling of inadequacy.
………………………….......

Q - If I am asked of how much do I love my Wife or Husband? I answer 99%.

A - The 1% allows me to continually come up with other ways to show my love. I am amazed on how much bitterness comes between couples whom insist to their partners that if they don’t stop asking for reassurance, that proves that doubt is there. So the couple then does not have an opportunity to grow together as changes in life are presented.

………………………………..

Q - If I am asked by the business owner that I am employed with if I love my job. I answer 99%.

A - I don’t want to be stuck only doing what I am told to do just like everybody else is doing. I want to show my worth. The 1% allows me to look at myself within my job responsibilities and come up with more efficient ways to get my job completed. This way my job is always a new adventure and is rewarding without the need to always wait for the pay increase for me to work better.

…………………………………

The “99” in your life is the you that you think you know best. The “1” is the one that will step outside of the already habit formed established you, and will lead you to your other talents that you didn’t know you have. The 1% is the dreamer, and dreams do come true!

:)
