I acquired a box of pitons which were all made by Frank Applegate in the 1960s. The pitons were dropped off at the AZ Hiking Shack, then were donated to the Karabin Museum October 2021. Two nuts were also in the donated lot which have "AMC" stamped onto the nuts, "Arizona Mountaineering Club."
Three different shapes of aluminum pitons. Super lightweight and finely crafted by Frank Applegate. There are no manufacturer markings on the pitons.
I am not sure what the full story is with these pitons. For sure they look like they were made by Holubar but there are no markings on the pitons. The pitons are not fully finished having somewhat sharp edges and are quite dirty. I am not sure if Frank obtained these from the Holubar blacksmith, not sure if they are Holubar prototypes, also not sure if Frank Applegate made these pitons himself.
