George Rea
pitons

Over the years Dan Hafley has generously donated a few historic climbing pieces to the Karabin Climbing Museum. Mostly pitons that were from Steve Ropers personal collection. Showing two pitons that were originally made by George Rea in 1958 and given to Steve Roper in 1960. Steve used these pitons on his climbing ascents, then donated them to Dan Hafley, then they were donated to the Karabin Museum 7/2021. Big THANKS Dan!!!

On the letter Dan mistakenly wrote "Ed," which should be "George."

This piton is from Yvon Chouinards collection. I was thinking this piton is a Dolt angle shown in the 1958 Dolt catalog. But it also could be a George Rea piton. The Dolt pitons had a silver coating on them where this piton is in great unused condition but is rusty. Of course the 1958 Dolt pitons when they were first made could have been uncoated.
