T&D 2018
Roped Routes

For Thrash & Dangle Fest 2018 we decided to change the format to have 30' tall top rope routes be in the competition. The overall discipline is that the competitor will receive the points associated with the one rope route that they completed during the comp. However if the competitor climbs any other of the rope routes they will get a additional 100 points per route to add to their scorecard. 10 rope routes were offered ranging from lowest 200 points to highest 2000 points. The competition discipline also required that the competitor score will also be from the top 4 boulder problems they complete. There were no extra points given if the top rope route was climbed in one try, or in many tries.

4 boulder problems and one top rope route for overall score. Additional top ropes climbed receive an additional 100 points. So if two climbers successfully climbed the hardest 4 boulder problems in the comp, plus the hardest top rope climb in the comp, the two mutant climbers will be tied in score. They will then have to climb all of the additional top rope routes gaining 100 additional points each to outdo each other for the win. This type of format completely changed the overall strategy for every climber in every category in the comp. Super fun!!!

200 points, Many Faces Red Bull Route course set by Marty Karabin and Stephanie Ruiz. Rating was somewhere in the 5.9 range. We took all of the fun shapes holds and very colorful holds from the Phoenix Rock Gym and the Karabin Climbing Museum and crammed them all into a corner. The climber was required to climb only on the holds that had faces on them. 41 climbers successfully climbed the route in the comp.

1000 points, Caution Construction Route course set by Jim Waugh. Rating was somewhere in the 5.11 range. Joel Fisher in the photos showing how the route is climbed. Route starts in a overhanging corner leading to a hanging ball and big Titan pocketed hold which leaves the climber with no footholds for a few moves. I believe we made the left arete off for the comp. Climb across the thin angled tufa hold which leads to another hanging ball, then finish on two hanging balls at the top of the route. The route holds are marked with yellow on black striped tape. 15 climbers successfully climbed the route in the comp.

1200 points, egg shell and rope climb Route course set by Darby Moran and Jeremy Cox. Rating was somewhere around 5.11 range. The route is on the overhanging side of the tower where in this photo a girl is climbing and preparing to get herself onto the big egg hold. From the egg hold is a white hanging rope with a knot tied on the bottom of it which is seen in the photo. From the egg hold stance, climb up the white rope to a few more climbing holds that lead to the top of the climb. Route holds are marked with red and black tape. 3 climbers during the comp successfully climbed the route.
