CAMP Pitons
- page one -

Not sure exactly when CAMP made its first piton, however CAMP has been creating products since 1889. CAMP was creating ice axes in the 1920s, and other gear for mountaineering in 1950.

First a few things about CAMP pitons. There are a few different manufacturer logo marks used for the pitons. This diamond logo mark was used on the CAMP ice axe products from 1950 - 1976. Not sure what markings the earliest CAMP pitons had on them.

Starting in 1975 CAMP was creating Lost Arrow pitons for Chouinard. The pitons were numbered and marked with CAMP and INTERALP.

1973 CAMP catalog shows many pitons made by Chouinard. There are two listings for CAMP pitons, Plastificati (Anello Fisso) and Universal.

In 1975 CAMP began manufacturing Lost Arrow pitons for Chouinard. CAMP/Interalp also was a distributor of Chouinard ice axes and pitons in Europe. Over time the CAMP manufacturers name was also added to the Chouinard Angles, Bongs, and Knifeblades.

Interalp - Is a company that distributed CAMP products in Europe and the USA 1968 - 1980.

The "CAMP Interalp" or "Interalp CAMP" manufacturers mark on the pitons seems tough to track. My dates on the Chouinard Lost Arrow display may need to be switched around. Showing the CAMP 1976 catalog to the right where most of the Lost Arrow pitons are "Interalp CAMP", but the Nut Cracker shows "CAMP Interalp."

The CAMP 1973 catalog shows Chouinard Bongs, but these are CAMP-Interalp-Chouinard bongs which were created sometime in the later 1970s. What is strange is that these Bongs do not appear in any of the other CAMP catalogs. The photo to the right shows that there were two different finishes that the Bongs were created with.
