T&D 2012 COMP NOTES:
The 2012 T&D comp was totally awesome!!!
- We added new Side Events: The Four Peaks Obstacle Course!!! The obstacle course was built in and took up the entire Yellow Exit canyon in the gym. Competitors were challenged with rope swings, a balance beam, zig zagging in and out and over and under 12 Four Peaks beer kegs, some easy climbing, and the ropes spider web crawl to the big finish hold on the floor. All of this challenge and still the fastest time came to a impressive 22.64 seconds. So much fun!!! Props to Malcolm Person for directing the competitors through this event during the comp!

But for additional fun, once the competitor finished the Four Peaks Obstacle Course the competitor was handed a large dice (die - single) to roll and see how many more raffle tickets were awarded for getting through the obstacle course. The dice was a blow up beach ball type of thing. However for the awards ceremony we had to have a alternate prize for the event since if a kid won the prize which included alcohol items, if the parent of the kid was not present, or the parents didn’t drink alcohol, the Four Peaks prize was raffled off to a secondary competitor that could accept the Four Peaks grand prize.
- The Balance Beam also had a dice roll for extra raffle tickets to all who completed the side event.

- The Red Bull raffle route was a 30’ rope climb of 75 awesome animals and bizarre artistic shaped climbing holds.
- The Evolv shoes route was a 30’ roped climb where the climbing holds were actually the used Evolv rental shoes that were no longer in use at the Phoenix Rock Gym. The competitors climbed the shoes! I drilled a larger hole in the sole of the shoes for the bolt and large washer so the shoes could be bolted to the wall, and a additional large screw with washer for the shoes if needed. The route was really cool where competitors at times untied some of the laces making the route harder for the following competitors.
- We added the Karabin Climbing Museum items Guess Jar. The jar was filled with climbing wall Tnuts and the competitors guessed how many items were in the jar. Write your guess in the provided box on the scorecard. The museum jar was on a shelf attached to the climbing wall where competitors could turn the jar but could not lift it. For further fun, within the center of the jar out of view I hid a Four Peaks beer bottle so when it came to revealing the winner during the awards ceremony, we first opened the Tnuts jar and pulled out the beer bottle receiving a “Boo” from the crowd. Then Robert and I shared the beer while laughing.
- Dropped the One Arm Climbing Side Event
- Dropped the Spinner Route Side Event
- Dropped the Crab Walk Side Event
- We had a highball bouldering area set and completed as planned for the competition. Unfortunately the day before the comp, as we arrived at Climbmax Climbing Gym to pick up the larger crash pads that were previously okayed by the gym owner, I guess a shift of ownership occurred and we were surprisingly denied the use of the pads. So suddenly all of the preset boulder comp problems for the highball area had to be reworked since we had no safety padding for the problems. This mess was thrown into our laps the day before the comp. It became a very exhaustive long evening for everybody that was finalizing the comp routes since the final 105 boulder problems alignment info was needed to be able to number all of the individual boulder problem starts.
- The comp entry price was raised from $30.00 to $45.00.
- The comp requirement of top 7 boulder problems for score, was changed to top 5 boulder problems for score.
- The sponsor raffle problems were all lower rated problems so more competitors could get into the raffles.

- I don’t have info of the final amount that the Cash Pad raffle raised. Usually it topped out around $500.00

For the 2012 T&D I created a bunch of awesome trophies which were given to the side event winners.

For the 2012 T&D comp I wanted to have a bigger ribbon design than the previous years but the problem was that the bigger the ribbon, the more thicker the triangle fold was where the eyelet was punched into the triangle ribbon top. So I came up with a new idea of using a straw to hold the integrity of the ribbon to be flat, and placing the knot of the yellow masonry string within the straw. The sewing had to be perfect so the straw could tightly fit into the ribbon top. Ribbons were all cut out by hand. - MK Productions Of Course! Ribbons printed by Express Screen Printing.

Every First Place winner received a wood plaque that was made by Paul Diefenderfer. Paul created a branding iron of the PRG logo and burned the logo onto the wood. Then attached PRG T&D wordage on white fiber paper.

T&D 2012 T-shirt art and t-shirts. For 2012 I tried to outdo myself with the design showing it was all about climbing. This design even has a locking carabiner and rope, and very cool climbing character hanging off of the PRG logo. For the front of the shirt I did not include the "Staff" wordage, and I was looking for something different like having a shield type design hang off of the shoulder. Shirts printed by Express Screen Printing. I did print a few black t-shirts with white ink that came out totally awesome!!!
