Climbing NUTS
- page one -

To Stephane Pennequin - Hello!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Okay down to business.
Looking for who made the first nut(s) that was available for "sale to the public."
1959 Little Mesters?       Or the 1961 Acorn?
And in this list does the 1962 MOAC come in third?
…………………………………………......................
To Marty - In fact, only the Acorn, the MOAC, and the Cracker were commercialized (“sale to the public”), but at a later date, more or less distant, from their invention. Below is a summary of the creation dates:
    •    Derek Carnell (England), aluminium wedge, April 1953, (only used as a aid climbing chock).
    •    John Brailsford (England), Acorn, 1961.
    •    John Brailsford (England), MOAC, 1961/1962.
    •    Charles Curtis (England), Little Mesters, 1961/1962, (Aluminium blocks were cast or cut and then drilled from the top (single large hole) and then the bottom (two small holes). The wire was inserted, tied and the knot pulled back down into the larger hole. He then set the knot in place with epoxy resin (araldite).
    •    Trevor Peck, Cracker, 1962 (the wire ends were locked and silver soldered into copper sleeve).
    •    John Earnshaw (England), The Spud, 1963.
    •    Bruce Bedbord (England), wired-mounted climbing nuts, 1963, (swaged with the Talurit ferrule system).
    •    Brian Henderson (England), crossed wired nuts, 1965.

Old exquisite catalog: 1964 Fisher catalog shows Alloy Knurled Blocks (not sure who mfg is), also shown is Troll Wedges, available for sale to the public. The challenge: seeking any catalog info that shows a nut for sale, pre-1964.

This is a small slice of a Clog Cog presented by Jim Zahn. Stephane figured it out saying that it was created to be worn as a necklace.

........ Additional notes from Stephane Pennequin about a few items in the Mixed Nuts Display.

Exact replica of the original John Brailsford’s Acorn (1961) made by Bas Ingle’s son, Mat Ingle, in 2001, and assembled by John Brailsford. From Stéphane Pennequin.

Replica of the original “Coins Réglables” (adjustable chock) made and given by Stéphane Pennequin. The French rope party, composed of “Southerners” Franck Ruggeri and Didier Ughetto, perfected a set of these devices in 1962 for the north face of Corno Stella (Argentera).

A few months ago, I acquired two mysterious anodized nuts on wire that are stamped “ELITE”, and that I could not identify. Recently, after many years of research, I finally found a nice copy of the book, Sicherheitskreis im DAV, Ausschuß für Sicherheit am Berg. Tätigkeitsbericht 1974-1979, which I immediately ordered for a very reasonable price. I quite believe that I discovered the solution to the enigma in this Pit Schubert’s interesting book. I don't speak German at all but with the help of Google translator I learned that ELITE was Clog's importer in Germany. As Clog has never marketed anodized jammers, nothing allowed me to come to this conclusion. So these nuts were made by Clogwyn Climbing Equipment in North Wales.

The earliest set of Forrest Titons only had a signature mark (early 1973). Soon afterwards the tree was added around the signature mark (later 1973).
